Care for the living world!

Caring for the environment is not only a central leitmotif in our exhibition Ecologies and Politics of the Living and interactive media sculpture Collective Action Viewer at this year’s Vienna Biennale PLANET LOVE - Climate Care in the Digital Age, but the protection of nature has been on our minds for a long time and has been anchored in the programme of our last years. The exhibition ::KAIROS. Recall of Earth from November 2021 is dedicated to the weather influenced by our environmental factors.

The exhibition TOXIC TEMPLE was on view at AIL from 6 to 26 February 2020 and is part of the Alumni in Residence series, which explores artistic research ideas by graduates.

Anna Lerchbaumer and Kilian Jörg are alumni of the Angewandte.

This exhibition was supported by ARTist – graduate association of the University of Applied Arts, and was realized on February 2020 with three performative evenings at the AIL.

Leached soils, acidified seas, polluted atmospheres. We are haunted by the repressed. We can no longer escape its poison. LET’S GET SICK WITH IT!

A shrine for the inner contradictions, absurdities and risks we are indulging into on a daily basis. A solidarization with the facts.

We enter wastelands instead of unspoiled soil and let the artifacts speak for themselves. Colourful assemblages of things that connect the known cosmos, shaky grounds of new divinity and acrid smells that carry us into the sublime. Landfills are the new temples. In a sadistic manner we inhale the here and now. Transformative forces are released. Free radicals. Rituals to unmask the chaos beneath the smooth surface.

What changes when we religiously worship the power of toxicity? Can a cosmic connection be achieved in our time of disaster through a cult of pollution?

In a processual exhibition, Anna Lerchbaumer and Kilian Jörg venerate the beauty of the oil stains, the sublimity of technoscrap, the enlightenment of radioactivity and the transcendence of extinction. Perhaps our new gods will be smelly zombies. LET`S MEET AT THE END OF THE WORLD and let’s dance in the intoxication of poisoning!

Kilian Jörg is a philosopher and artist, nomadically traveling between Vienna, Berlin and Brussels. He is the founder of the collective philosophy unbound and is mainly concerned with ecological epistemology, as well as the transdisciplinary interfaces between philosophy and art. Latest publications: with Jorinde Schulz: The Club Machine (Berghain), Textem 2018; Backlash - Essays on the Resilience of Modernity, Textem Spring 2020.

Sound and video artist Anna Lerchbaumer ( *1989 in Innsbruck, Austria) takes a humorous as well as critical approach to our technological developments. Anna creates sound performances and expansive installations in which sculptural aspects play an important role. She spans a field between visual art, music and performance. Objects become instruments, balloons become performers, and field recordings become spatial installations.

An examination of the monstrous hopes we project into new technologies and an exploration of the artistic possibilities they offer. It makes the poetic audible and visible in the everyday and the inconspicuous. A change of perspective, a desecration of electrical devices and a way to loop around the big findings.

Shaped by country air, technology and culture in constant exchange with friends, things and artists as well as a member of Anulla. Her work has been shown at the Galaxy Museum in China, Headquarters and Krinzinger Projects in Vienna, among others.

An utopian future requires a critical present in which the urgency of ecological, economic and political-social change is taken seriously. The program aims to stimulate reflection on possible alternatives and strategies.

::KAIROS. Recall of Earth addresses the relationship between humans and natural events. The term kairos relates to natural phenomena on the one hand and to temporality on the other – kairos is the modern Greek word for ‘weather’, but it also means ‘the right moment’. The ambiguity inherent in this word runs like a golden thread through the exhibition.

Starting out with meteorological aspects regarding the ‘weather’, the exhibition also tries to draw a picture of the psyche and its entanglement with natural phenomena.

The boundaries between different levels of perception dissolve; the influence of the outside world becomes tangible and visible; the illusion of being able to control perceptions falls victim to deception itself.

The show explores the contribution of the abstract cosmic and the concrete terrestrial conception of space in relation to space/time, which can no longer be reduced to a philosophical-transcendental a priori as the still prevalent division of social contexts and nature, of bodies and the psyche needs to be called into question.

Do you eat sustainably? Do you eat up well? Do you eat politically? A collective dinner around food and sustainability.

EAT politics ART is an interdisciplinary effort. We bring food and sustainability to the same table for two evenings. At AIL, theses from art and science are brought together, debates are provoked with the help of Eat Art actions.

The goal is the public generation of hitherto unconsidered insights. Honey & bunny create two provocative EAT ART MEALS, whose setting, ritual and dishes correspond to the themes ‘VALUE - food’ and ‘sustainable table manners’. For each meal, three experts are invited, whose work focuses are related to the themes of the evenings. They will be questioned, squeezed, criticized. Taboos are forbidden.

Showcase: Sustainable and open exhibition system

Showcase presents selected projects, topics and fields of research from die Angewandte

The project is an open exhibition and furniture system that radically embraces and integrates waste materials, especially recycled plastic PETG which has beneficial structural and chemical durability.

Through structural optimization algorithms (via Karamba) and machine learning-based topological optimization (via Ameba), the new furniture system not only can assemble waste materials for different kinds different display types of furniture but also allows participatory activities for future reuse. Instead of downcycling, the project intends to augment the potential of reuse and introduce intricate aesthetics in the intelligent system.

One System

The proposal aims to achieve multiple tasks through one sustainable modular-based system. The joint transit in between surface as program and line as a structural component.

The line becomes a structural component that extends the exhibition system and forms the space. While the surface is the functional area for board/pedestal/seats.

Universal Joint

Via universal joints, the system can connect in multiple directions and open system to connect with different elements. Thus it results in various setup potentials.

Sustainable Tectonic

The joint is composed of recycled plastic, reused metal pipe, and timber that is easily reconfigured, reused, recycled, and supported by local material /waste management.
