What role will museums play in the future? How socially relevant will they be?

The exhibition FUTURE undone will question potential future iterations of the museum and their conditions, based on an analysis of the historic and present situation. With this experiment, the interdisciplinary curatorial team will explore unknown futures and use fiction as part of a participative thought process.

The exhibits will question the concepts of display, reception, participation, barriers and digitalization in museums.

The exhibition presents imaginary future scenarios: The main character is a researcher from a fictitious academic field who investigates material finds in order to learn more about previous societies’ utopian concepts. At a deserted AIL in the distant future, she comes across the art collection from 2017 and tries to identify and classify the objects. The curators use this relationship between a future scientist and the present collection to address past, present and future conditions of museums for collecting, conserving, educating and exploring.
