This is not a Park Lab

Who owns the city? Public Space = Parking Space?

Vienna offers space for 726.100 cars, but not for one AIL Park Lab

AIL Park Lab 2023

The Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab (AIL) is a platform for art, science, and artistic research – a place that creates and facilitates connections. And so AIL wants to expand into the public space too: connecting inside and outside, the university with its neighborhood, relaxing and content.

As part of the Grätzloase initiative, two parking lots were supposed to be occupied and newly designed as stage and place to rest, a meeting point as well as place for taking a pause, exchange and program.

This was the plan, but plot twist:

AIL Park Lab was not approved from official site – or actually we are still waiting for the official response – because it seems space for cars is considered to be more important than space for humans.

As alternative program we invited Cabriobeet to take the space of AIL Park Lab for the time of Angewandte Festival (27–30 Jun). The private initiative of filmmaker Christoph Schwarz and neighborhood project from Vienna's 9th district, is a raised herbs garden bed in a yellow Peugeot 306 as well as an art project with an activist message.

So together we ask:

Vienna, are you a parking lot?
