Performance View: The Trial

in English from 2018

First staged in Accra as a work-in-progress by three actors from Ghana: Dr So, Jeneral NtaTia, Yibor Kojo Yibor. Directed by Simon Eifeler

‘Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., for one morning, without having done anything truly wrong, he was arrested.’ – Franz Kafka

In times of growing fear and resentment against anything vaguely unfamiliar, unknown and strange, this fast-paced and mad theatre adaptation of the great European classic The Trial by Franz Kafka represents an effective encounter with the unknown, both in form and content.

Directed by Simon Eifeler, The Trial was first staged in Accra as a work-in-progress by three actors from Ghana. Inspired by the creative force and diversity of the encounter with the unknown, another version featuring three German actors was produced in Düsseldorf. At AIL, both adaptations of Franz Kafka’s novel (written in 1949) will be reunited and bring together two entirely different cultures.
