AIL Postcard Edition Nr. 3 – Algorithmic Vertigo

A cooperation with Digitale Kunst / UBERMORGEN (Digital Arts)

Students of the course ‘Techniques of Presentation’ at the department of Digital Arts developed a series of postcards installed in the former cashier hall, Apr 2026 – Jul 2026

Speculative storytelling becomes a tool for remoulding the present by imagining possible futures. We address tensions between control and freedom in a world of pervasive digital mediation.

We see the fatigue.

We acknowledge that the relationship between reality and the imagined future is shifting.

We prompt ourselves towards new ways of experiencing (digital) existence, exploring reconfigurations of self and body.

Navigating vertigo.

AIL is presenting the third postcard edition, installed in the former cashier hall of Otto Wagner-Postsparkasse, in the center of Café Exchange.

This postcard series emerges from the exhibition Algorithmic Vertigo (2025), which was developed from the seminar Techniques of Presentation at the department of Digital Arts. The student exhibition was created for FOTO WIEN 2025 in cooperation with the AIL and the theme of the exhibition was based on the idea of Expanded Photography and FOTO WIEN’s yearly topic Dynamic Futures. The exhibited works explored new configurations of reality, the body, and its position within the topographies of the post-digital.

AIL Postcard Edition Nr. 2 – (dis)honest images

In cooperation with the department Applied Photography & Time-Based Media

Students of the course ‘Photographic Narration in Publication Formats’ led by Claudia Holzinger develop a series of postcards installed in the former cashier hall, Jun 2025 – Feb 2026

(dis)honest images

beauty in ugliness,

uncanny reality of human life.

against the supposed order of the body

something closer to truth, rawness and complexity.

silent performance of transformation.

nature seems synthetic

and art is instinctively honest.

reconstruct the inherited identity.

it makes you uncomfortable

thinking everything is a lie for a moment.

it’s also about humans,

everything we have done and can do and we have to live with.

Iconic drama – rage mode is on.

In collaboration with the Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab, Claudia Holzinger’s Photographic Narration in Publication Formats course created a series of DIN A6-format postcards. Following the principle of silent mail, participants develop ideas and subjects through dialogue to create a coherent series together. Presented as an installation in the former cashier’s hall of the Postsparkasse, postcards can be taken and sent. In this place of exchange, we encourage you to stay connected.

Together we ask: Where are we and where are we going?

For its ten year anniversary, AIL presents a special edition of postcards. Installed in the former cashier hall of Otto Wagner Postsparkasse, visitors are invited to select one and send it out into the world. Valerie Prinz, student and alumni of the department of Creative Writing [Sprachkunst] has developed a series of statements which emerge from AIL’s cosmos of questions, research and program.

Every day visitors and tourist come into the building, looking for a post office. Still not selling stamps, for a moment, we keep the expectations coming with the building of Postsparkasse.

As a temporary installation, you can find now a postcard holder in the setting of Café Exchange. Pick your favorite cards and send them out into the world.

The famous building of the ‘Postsparkasse’, designed by Otto Wagner for Georg Coch, built between 1904 and 1906, and used as a bank until 2017. Since 2021, the University of Applied Arts Vienna has presented the Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab (AIL) and Café Exchange in the ‘Kassenhalle’ and two exhibition spaces. The AIL is the university’s platform for art, science and artistic research. At AIL, the relationship between art and science and the potential of interdisciplinarity is explored, while making artistic research at the University of Applied Arts Vienna accessible to a broad public.
