Zero and One Chairs

An encounter between photography and the object

Part of Vienna Design Week. Presented by the department Applied Photography & Time-Based Media

The exhibition Zero and One Chairs was created as part of MATCH!, a recurring initiative organised by the department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media, which explores the synergistic potential of student teams from different degree programs.

In collaboration with the department Industrial Design, this year’s focus was on the intersection of photography and the object, with particular attention paid to the relationship with set design, styling, casting and narrative.

Seen from the perspective of Applied Photography, the object and thus the chair, is a welcome protagonist. Photography’s multiple applied genres are cited here: documentary, fashion, advertising, architecture and the portrait. When the function in Industrial Design coalesces with the idea of the purpose in Applied Photography, the question of factuality emerges.

Be not mistaken: The most literal things are often the most confusing and enigmatic. Between what it is and how it is*, worlds unfold. We put the images to work.
